Curve fitting is the process of constructing a curve, or mathematical function, that has the best fit to a series of data points, possibly subject to constraints. Curve fitting can involve either interpolation, where an exact fit to the data is required, or smoothing, in which a “smooth” function is constructed that approximately fits the data.
To fit a curve in Microsoft Excel 2010:
- Tool to be used.
The Solver in Excel will be used for the curve fitting. The Solver was not added in by default. To add the Solver into Excel:
- Click on “Options” under File to open the Options window
- Select Add-Ins and Excel Add-Ins. Click on Go button (Figure 1) to open the Add-Ins window

Check Solver Add-in and click on OK (Figure 2)
- Click on Data on Excel. The Solver will appear on Analysis (Figure 3)
- Work on curve fitting
- Put the x, y data in Excel (Figure 4) and plot the data as X Y Scatter chart (Figure 5).
